Never Say Never

It is not secret that I have a love for baby/ kids clothes!  Specifically traditional, smocked or appliqued clothes.

I can count on one hand the number of times Kate has worn shorts.

I think sweet Southern baby boys should wear bubbles until at least two years old.  And smocked jonjons until at least 3.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that I have always, and I mean always, said that no child of mine would wear character t-shirts.  Not only am I not a fan of casual t-shirts on little babies but the characters are just so bright.  And tacky in your face.

An appliqued Mickey?  Sure

And airbrushed princess or Dora on a tee? Not so much.

Well, I'm here to tell you, never say never.

The kids and I made a Target run on Tuesday.  I needed to get diapers for Will so we were in the kid's section.  I decided to take a look at swim suit cover ups for Kate while we were there.

That's when it happened.

Kate spotted it.

A Minnie Mouse shirt.

With glitter on it.

Suddenly I heard "momma? Mimmie? Mimmie shirt? Awe cute. Peas momma?"

In that instant, any decision I had previously made about character tees went out the window.

There was no way I could say no.  I mean, come on, she even said please!

The shirt was in our buggy, and in Kate's hands, as fast as I could locate her size.

She hugged it.  She loved it.  She looked at it like it was a prized possession.

But wait, it gets worse...

Kate insisted on wearing this shirt the second we got home.  And the only thing that we had to match said Minnie shirt was a pair of jorts.

Yes, my child wore a character tee and jorts.  And perfected her duck face.  Apparently she is training for Real Housewives of the Trailer Park.  I kid.

All afternoon Kate kept looking at her shirt, saying "awe Mimmie.  Cute." and thanking me for her new shirt.

She was so proud!

And it made me so happy!

We won't talk about how I dressed her in two smocked outfits for 4th of July to compensate.

So, I'm here to tell you, never say never!  Anything is game when you become a parent!

What's that quote? Something like, "I was the perfect parent until I actually had kids"?  Yeah, it's so true!

I totally "get" the character tee thing--but like you, that FLEW out the window one Eme could ask on her own for a dora shirt and then? our disney trip? It all flew out the window. I stocked that kid up on so many character tee's--she got more while there, and got tons for her bday. So, I lost that battle. I have to laugh that jean shorts aren't a norm for you--I mean, here, shorts like that (in any color, really) are completely normal and considered cute and totally acceptable! haha. I think Kate looks way, way cute in this outfit :)

While I'm still not keen on character shirts I also didn't used to be a big fan of certain dressy outfits for boys. I always thought I would have a boy AND a girl, so I didn't dress Nate in bubbles and definitely NOT knee socks. But since Cole is in fact not a girl, haha, I have been much looser in what I thought I would dress him in--bubbles all day and button on outfits WITH knee socks. Yes, he's been called a girl and I don't care :)

You're a great momma for getting Kate that Minnie shirt!

Exactly. I'm not a fan of character tees either, but when your baby looks at you with those big eyes and smile you just crumble. My daughter doesn't really care but my son loves his Thomas t shirt and Super Grover shirt :).

As for boys and bubbles - not for us. I actually don't like that look at all. I am more into the preppy look (plaid/khaki shorts with polos) than the bubble/jon jon thing. Smocked clothes on boys just... well... No thanks. Plus, my son is into EVERYTHING. I change his outfit at least 3x a day in summer. There is no way I would spend a fortune on a wardrobe of smocked jon jons that he would destroy.

Same here, I have ALWAYS said even before having kids that they would never dress my child in character themed clothing. I ate my words big time because now, at least a few days a week Grant will have on either a Batman or Angry Bird t-shirt. I tried to limit character stuff to pj's only, but that did not last long at all. I guess they are only little once, and at least they are happy!

Omgosh yes, I totally hear you! I always thought character tees, etc were tacky as hell, and I would NEVER dress my child in them.
Now? My son has several Lightening McQueen shirts, Thomas the Train, and. Go Diego Go. We have to pick our battles, right?

She will fit in just perfectly in Jersey!! Love her mini duck-face...she's the only one in the world who can make it look cute!

So glad to see her dressed like a normal 21st century girl and not like she stepped out of Gone With the Wind.

Please enlighten the sartorially challenged what bubbles and jon-jons are. Not familiar with those garments. I guess they are not sold at Target.

I can deal with character shirts a little better than I deal with those shirts with the terribly cheesy sayings on it!! I CAN'T stand those!! Lila has won the character shirt battle too, but some of them actually aren't so bad :) I will be getting her smocked minnie outfits, however, for our future disney trips!!

Omg kp has more Dora pjs than I care to admit. When her face lights up at the sight of them I can't resist! I think Kate looks so cute in her shorts!!!

At least she looks adorable in her shirt!
I share your opinion about the character shirts and I also caved to a Sesame St. shirt when my daughter was 22 months.
She's 3 now and I've given up. She even talked me into getting Mickey onsie's for my son when he was 3 months old! Part of me wishes we never went down this path because she has a closet full of beautiful clothes and wants to wear her character tees every day. I allow her to choose her own outfit (aka - character tee and mismatched skirt and hair bow) every other day (with a few exceptions for special events). She gets tons of compliments for the wild combos she puts together which only reinforces her fashion sense.
In retrospect I wish I'd limited the character clothes to PJ's only.

Love this post! I love traditional & smocked clothes too. Lately my little Maggie decided her favorite tshirt is a hand-me-down from a friend that is a neon yellow tshirt with Dora dressed as a cowgirl that says "someone in San Antonio loves me". She always whips is out when I have a super matching outfit planned for her & her baby sister!

I said the same thing when Caleb was born. I still cringe when he picks out a spiderman shirt. Oh and don't get me started on "light up" shoes.

HA! I love everything about this post, it's even complete with jorts! And that saying? It dead on! All bets are off the day you welcome your first child to the world! I'd say two smocked outfits on the 4th is perfect compensation for a day in jorts and a minnie t-shirt :)

I think she looks adorable. Lil' Miss has the exact same Minnie shirt that she did the big wide eyes and "pwea" for. It's hard to resist!

I had to google jonjons because I wasn't too sure but thanks to you, Stella has 3 smock outfits.

Your kiddos are both cute and our family has been praying for you all since the beginning.

I absolutely hate character shirts! That is exactly why the FOUR Mario Brothers shirts my MIL bought for Isaac while I was in Texas are hidden in his closet. He's on to me though and wears them every chance he gets. Love your Housewives comment HA! Miss ou guys!!
